Black Mold

While there are hundreds of different types of mold, some are dangerous but among these, black mold is considered the most toxic. The issue with black mold is that it presents three unique challenges.  First, this type of mold can develop in virtually any home or business, meaning no one is excluded. Second, black mold is often hard to detect, sometimes being in existence for a long time before being discovered. Third, this type of mold can be quite difficult to remove.

This fungus is officially known as strachybotrys chartarum, as well as strachybotrys atra. Black mold develops as the result of water or moisture, which is why it is commonly found in bathrooms and kitchens. However, other common locations include crawl spaces, basements, attached porches, and even various outdoor areas. Although black mold is usually a blackish color, thus the name, it can also have a yellowish or greenish color.

Although scheduled inspections can be completed by a professional who performs black mold remediation services, most home and business owners can detect the presence of mold by doing self-inspections. This would be something important for every home and business but it is especially critical in older structures and buildings located in regions of the country that receive significant amounts of rainfall and humidity.

Black mold is highly toxic, putting a person at risk when airborne spores are inhaled or mold comes in contact with the skin. Typical allergic reactions are common with a first occurrence but multiple exposures to black mold, serious health problems could ensue. Unfortunately, the dangers of black mold are so serious that it has been the direct result of many deaths.

Black mold can be effectively and safely removed by a home or business owner although taking appropriate precautions to include wearing protective clothing and eyewear, as well as a respiratory mask would be imperative. However, if in cases where mold has existed for a long time, if the volume is more than 50 square feet, or for someone with known allergies or a respiratory problem, it would be a worthwhile investment to have a black mold problem eliminated by a licensed professional.

The Dangers Of Black Mold

Black mold is one of the most common types of mold. It is a fungus that loves to grow in humid areas, with moderate temperature, and adequate amount of light. It can grow in your house or building, particularly in places such as the walls, tiles, windows, ceilings, under the carpets, and many more. Since it loves moisture, dampness should be controlled. The dangers of black mold have been reported many times. Its symptoms are worsened when the affected person has immune deficiencies such as AIDS, HIV, and Leukemia. A person with respiratory problem like asthma can also be seriously affected by black mold.

Black mold or toxic black mold produces mycotoxins which are harmful for both humans and animals. It can be Stachybotrys chartarum or Stachybotrys chlorohalonata. Its pores which contain the mycotoxins can be rarely seen by the naked eyes. It can contaminate the food and even some of the equipments in your house like the air conditioner and HVAC systems. The book Black Mold: Its' Effects and How to Rid Your Home of it, which is written by Al Susoeff, Jr., explains the danger of black mold to humans.

“For sensitive people, exposure to molds can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation. For those with serious allergies to molds, more severe reactions can occur. Severe reactions are often seen among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around grain, corn, or peanuts. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Some people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs. This can be very serious.”
